The burn test is the most reliable way to verify if the pashmina shawl is genuine or fake. Pull some pashmina strands from your garment and burn it. If the burnt fibers turn matte and turn into ash powder when you rub it between your fingers, it is a good sign that your pashmina is genuine. It should give off the smell of burnt hair as it is in fact, hair. If your pashmina fibers melt and turn into beady lumps and give off sweet chemical like smell, then it is fake. It will also feel sticky when you rub it between your fingers.
